Defoor Movers

Susan and Martin Defoor

Martin Defoor at Wikipedia

The Defoors came to the Bolton Road area in the early 1850’s and managed what was call the Montgomery Ferry. Bolton was a kind of town of it’s own, grown up because of railroad influence, but for wagons and livestock and people, the standard way of crossing the Chattahoochee was by ferry.

A ferry was constructed with a barge and docks on each side of the river. It often included a rope to hold the ferry on its path crossing the river to prevent the river currents from sweeping the ferry down stream.

The Montgomery Ferry was built by Major James McConnell Montgomery, but became later known as Defoor’s Ferry. Tragically, Martin and Susan were murdered with an axe in 1879. They are buried in the Montgomery Family Cemetery in northwest Atlanta
